SAT French Subject Test
Bonjour Magooshers and Happy Fourth of July! What better way to celebrate Americas independence than talking about the SAT French Subject Test?! Believe it or not, I took four years of French in high school. It was pretty interesting, and I was even lucky enough to use a bit of it on a trip to France some years ago. Unfortunately, Iââ¬â¢ve forgotten a lot of it. Oh well, cest la vie. Dont worry, though, my forgetful brain wont get in the way of me helping you prepare for test day! Photo byà crossed-flag-pins.com In this article Iââ¬â¢ll be going over the SAT French Subject Test, giving you the need-to-know information. If you get to the end of the article and still have questions, make sure to check out the official College Board website to learn more and try out some sample problems! Should I take the SAT French Subject Test? Good question. Even if you took French throughout high school (like me), French may not be your strongest subject (like me). In that case, itââ¬â¢s best to look at the other SAT Subject Tests to see where you would do your best. If you are a master in French, though, there are two main reasons why taking the test is a great idea. The first has to do with college admissions. High SAT Subject Test scores are a great ââ¬Ëcherry on topââ¬â¢ to a strong application package. If you want to help your admissions odds, make sure to take the test early enough so you can send colleges your scores. Doesnt the SAT French Subject Test look nice up there? The second advantage has to do with course placement. Your future college, like your current high school, probably requires some foreign language courses as a graduation requirement. Depending on the college, your high score may excuse you from these classes, saving you money. Or, if you want to continue learning French, you can place into a higher-level class. If course placement (and not admissions) is your goal, make sure to take the test near the end of your last French course in high school. Which French Subject Test should I take? Ah, yes, there are two choices, one with listening and one without. As you might (rightly) assume, the test with listening asks you to bring an extra set of skills to the table. As listening is an essential part of any language, it is my humble opinion that the French test with listening is seen as more advantageous to both college admissions counselors and college placement. Which one you choose, though, is up to you. Do you have French teachers who encourage conversation and immersion? Take the test with listening. Do you do most of your work straight out of a textbook/workbook? Take the test without listening. Whatââ¬â¢s on the test? Besides French? Just kidding. Both the listening and non-listening tests are comprised of 85 multiple-choice questions. Both tests last one hour and your final score will fall somewhere on a 200-800 point scale. If youââ¬â¢re taking the non-listening test, expect an even split between vocabulary, sentence structure, and reading comprehension questions. If youââ¬â¢re taking the test with listening, expect listening questions to comprise 35% of all questions. The remaining 65% of questions are a fairly even split between vocabulary, sentence structure, and reading comprehension. Depending on your version of the test, you may encounter more reading comprehension questions. Final Thoughts Well, Magooshers, I hope Iââ¬â¢ve given you a decent introduction to the SAT French Subject Test. I wish you the best of luck in your future French endeavors. Just donââ¬â¢t forget to take some practice tests between now and test day. ðŸâ¢â

Geoffrey Chaucer s Bath - 1767 Words
The Bible includes over sixty-nine references to God smiting down a man or performing genocide or inducing a war or famine in the Bible; even one count of a blasphemer being stoned to death. If The Cantebury Tales had been based on real events instead of just being the satirical work of Geoffrey Chaucer, at least one more count of death would have be added because the Wife of Bath commits the crime of blasphemy on multiple occasions. She turns the sacred words of God into a defense of her indecency. She uses his words to justify her twisted beliefs and actions. She speaks of lust and greed and power. But the most tragic part of all is what she is saying is necessary. She may not be representing women in the fairest light, but that is notâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As she continues on, the Wife of Bath manipulates the biblical scripture to ââ¬Å"make her case that God intended women to use their bodies carnallyâ⬠(Retractions). She does this by saying that ââ¬Å"God bad us for to wexe, without lye,/ That gentil text kan I wel understondeâ⬠(lines 28-29). She believes that she needs to marry as much as possible because it is what God intended for her to do. Although it is more commonly believed that God was referring to procreation within the limitations of marriage, she deserves credit for creativity. She uses the story of Solomon as a reference to multiple spouses by saying that ââ¬Å"he hadd wyves mo than oonâ⬠but the interpretation of the Bible at the time was at the mercy of the Roman Catholic Church (line 36). The Church believed that women were the cause of ââ¬Å"the original sin or the Fall of Manâ⬠based on the actions of Eve (Women History). Women were looked upon as ââ¬Å"instruments of temptation and sinâ⬠, they were believed to drag ââ¬Å"men down by the lure of their physicalityâ⬠, and were the ââ¬Å"instruments of manââ¬â¢s damnationâ⬠(Retractions). Though this is not the case, because women are pe rfect, these negative connotations caused women to lead ââ¬Å"extremely subservient livesâ⬠(Struggle of female equality). The Wife of Bathes may have been a satirical representation of women being greedy and lustful but her purpose was to contradict ââ¬Å"oppressive customs and assert her own overbearing assessment of the

Gender Roles and Attitudes toward Love in Shakespeares...
Romeo and Juliet is a heart-breaking tragedy written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare telling us the story of two teenage ââ¬Ëstar-crossââ¬â¢d loversââ¬â¢ whose unfortunate deaths ultimately unite the dispute between their two families. Despite the perils involved, they fall in love and marry with the help of two characters, Friar Lawrence and the Nurse. Throughout the play, Shakespeare portrays a range of different kinds of love through the central female characters. Maternal love is offered to Juliet by the Nurse and Julietââ¬â¢s own reckless and impetuous love brought about by inexperience, which results in a doomed love. Lady Capulet shows business and more of an economic view on love. While these types of love are being shown,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The man cannot eat or sleep without thinking about her and he does everything he can to win her over. The way Romeo is in love with Rosaline (his first love) adheres to the conventions of court ly love. Shakespeare also shows maternal love between the Nurse and Juliet. Reckless love is shown mainly by Juliet due to her immaturity and inexperience of love. Shakespeare introduces the play with a Prologue in Act One. The opening speech of the Prologue serves as an introduction to Romeo and Juliet, as a fourteen line sonnet. We are provided with information about where the play takes place, and given some background information about its characters. It introduces us by describing ââ¬Ëtwo noble householdsââ¬â¢ in the city of Verona hold an ââ¬Ëancient grudgeââ¬â¢ against each other that remains a source of violent conflict. However this conflict will mend by two lovers who die and that ends the quarrel between the two families, the Montagueââ¬â¢s and the Capuletââ¬â¢s. But it is difficult to understand its more important function. The Prologue does not just set the scene of Romeo and Juliet, it tells the audience exactly what is going to happen in the play. The Prologue refers to an ill-fated couple with its use of the word ââ¬Ëstar-crossed,ââ¬â¢ which means, against the stars. Stars were thought to control peopleà ¢â¬â¢s destinies. But the prologue itself creates this sense of fate by providing the audience with theShow MoreRelatedGender Construction And Patriarchal Power Structure Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare1402 Words à |à 6 PagesIn William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet, there are various issues regarding gender construction and how women are portrayed in the play. The women of the play have zero to no power and control over situations and are often viewed as weak and incapable. The idea of power and control over women is widely shown through Opheliaââ¬â¢s character, who does not get to choose how her future will play out and who she will spend it with. This thoroughly connects to the Oedipus complex in the play as Gertrudeââ¬â¢s sexualityRead MoreEssay about Portrayal of Women in Shakespeares Hamlet 1227 Words à |à 5 PagesPortrayal of Women in Shakespeares Hamletà à Shakespeare was possibly the first writer to portray women as strong, crafty, and intelligent. However, he has still received criticism from feminists about his representation of women. Some have even accused him of misogyny. There are only two female characters in the play Hamlet - Gertrude, Hamlets mother and Ophelia, daughter of Polonius. Any debate based upon gender roles must therefore focus upon these two characters. Shakespeare portraysRead MoreThe Analysis of the Character Ophelia on Hamlet Essay1297 Words à |à 6 PagesIn William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet, Ophelia is the most static character in the play. (Using Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet) ââ¬â¢The course of true love never did run smoothââ¬â¢ - This is the answer indeed. As well as this we come to understand that with the roughness of love comes indifferent sexualities, gender conflicts and powered bravados that entwine themselves into one big mess to indeed create the established plays we read today. The natural stereotype of that time viewed women as weak, fickle, and dependent of the men in their society and subject to the decisions that men make for them. It was an exceedingly common depiction and very rarely was it proven wrong to the men of that time. Womenââ¬â¢s rights were nonexistent in this time period so it wasnââ¬â¢t unusual for the portrayal of women toRead MoreFemale Characters in Hamlet4091 Words à |à 17 Pagesis a story of one, or at most two persons. As a rule, they are male protagonists. But to say that Shakespeareââ¬â¢s female characters are shallow, undeveloped and used just as a decoration on the stage is very wrong. Women in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragedies have no leading role and they are, to paraphrase Northrop Frye,[1] not tragic heroines, but heroines in a tragedy. All female characters in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tragedies have one thing in common ââ¬â they end up dead. It is always an untimely, unnatural death. Specifically, Hamlet and Ophelia, although they both appear to be mad at times, their downfall (or supposed downfall) is quite different.
